WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs experienced a relatively small increase in coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. This ran counter to the statewide trend. As of Sunday, 271 cases have been reported in the village since the start of the pandemic, up by 10 from a week before. Figures on those who have recovered from the coronavirus are unavailable. The number of deaths stayed at two, with the last one reported in mid-July. The figure compares to 17.7 in La Grange Park, 17.8 in Darien, 22.4 in DuPage County, 22.6 in Clarendon Hills, 23.5 in Elmhurst, 24.7 in Hinsdale, 27.4 in suburban Cook County, 27.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands) and 28.6 in Burr Ridge. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 344,048, up 8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 9,214 state residents. Nationally, 8.1 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before. A total of 218,511 people have died from the virus in the United States.
