WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs continues to see rates of increase in coronavirus cases lower than the state's. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus cases in Western Springs rose to 297, up 16 from a week before. That represented a 6 percent hike. The week before, it was 4 percent. The number of deaths increased to three, with the last one reported on Halloween. That's a mortality rate of about 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the medical examiner. The figure compares to 19.5 in La Grange Park, 20.7 in Darien, 25 in Clarendon Hills, 26 in DuPage County, 26.4 in Elmhurst, 27 in Hinsdale, 29.1 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands), 31 in suburban Cook County and 31.8 in Burr Ridge. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 417,280, up 12 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 9,792 state residents. Nationally, 9.1 million people have caught the virus, up 6 percent from the week before. A total of 229,932 people have died from the virus in the United States.
