Four Paws will be offering a 6-week class (5 weeks of instruction; 6th week is evaluation) animal-assisted therapy class beginning on Monday, April 4th at 6:30 pm. The class will be held at A Country Kennels, 6737 Amsterdam Way, Wilmington, NC 28405. The class will meet once per week for 1 to 1.5 hours to cover the instructional and hands-on training to certify as a team. You and your dog will participate together. An additional handler can participate for a small additional fee. Dogs must be one year of age by May 9 and have strong and reliable obedience training which includes sit, down, stay (up to 30 seconds), walking nicely on leash without pulling, and coming when called. Dogs must be dog friendly and people-friendly. Equipment required is a 6 ft leash (no flexi leashes allowed), flat buckle or cloth martingale collar, and a gentle lead or head halti collar (optional). No choke, chain, or prong collars; harnesses allowed for dogs less than 15 lbs. The minimum number of handlers and dogs for the class to be held is 4; the maximum number is 10.
