WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — A man claiming to be a ComEd worker distracted a resident during a Western Springs burglary last week, according to a police report. It happened in the 3900 block of Ellington Avenue. About 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the imposter drove into the resident's driveway and claimed to need to trim trees in her back yard for ComEd, the report said. The resident was with the suspect for about 10 minutes in the back yard, police said. The suspect, police said, left when the resident became cold and wanted to go inside. Upon returning to the house, the resident found open doors and drawers and discovered more than $100 in cash and several pieces of jewelry missing, according to the report. The crime is known as a ruse burglary in which one person distracts the homeowner while another enters the house and commits theft.
