Description
The Marquette Campus Community is invited to the launch event for the new Center for Data, Ethics, and Society. The new Center for Data, Ethics, and Society at Marquette University invites members of the campus community to join us for our launch event on Campus Conversations on Data, Ethics, and Society. Grounded in the university’s Catholic, Jesuit mission of social justice, the Center is focused on confronting data ethics issues such as the controversies and consequences of our increasingly data-driven lives and spaces, unfair algorithmic biases, the unequal effects of computational decision-making, the privacy threats of ubiquitous surveillance systems, and the role for corporate social responsibility and accountability. The Center will take up these concerns through an applied and interdisciplinary approach to research, pedagogy, and community engagement. Our launch event will be the first in a series of activities to bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers, teachers, and practitioners within our campus community who are already contributing to these efforts. We can listen and learn from each other, brainstorm future directions and initiatives, and work to create a welcoming and diverse community. The event runs from 10:00-noon on Monday, April 4, 2022 in the Lunda Room at the Alumni Memorial Union, Marquette University. All members of the campus community are invited, and feel free to join for any part your schedule allows. Tentative Schedule: 10:00am - Welcome by Dean Heidi Bostic and Michael Zimmer 10:15am - Featured talk by Dr. Andrew Gustafson (Creighton University), a graduate of Marquette's Philosophy PhD program, and co-author of "An Ignatian Approach to big Data Ethics" 11:00am - Marquette Community Panel Discussion, featuring: Amber Wichowsky (Political Science)Bruce Boyden (Law School)Joseph Ogbonnaya (Theology)Sabirat Rubya (Computer Science)Scott Rex (COBA/NMDSI)11:45am - Brainstorming exercise & student project poster viewing session Contact Michael Zimmer ([email protected]) with any questions.
