Join us for the in-person workshop The Haul Out presented at Maritime Gloucester. Join us for The Haul Out, part of The Art of Wooden Boatbuilding: A Field Institute in Preserving the Past exploring the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area. This event is The Haul Out At Maritime Gloucester you will: While the skills of building the historic Gloucester Fishing Fleet are still practiced today without the skills of maintaining them these vessels would just rot. Harold Burnham and Michael DeKoster will introduce you to the traditional methods fishermen have used to haul, maintain, and launch wooden boats.See the docks, buildings and sight of the oldest continuously operating Marine Railway in the country.Hear from experienced personnel about hauling a wooden vessel and the many things that can go horribly wrong. Develop a blocking plan for a real ship using real plans and help arrange blocking on the railway.Learn the tricks of the trade about launching wooden boats, and how to prevent them from sinking when you do. The Art of Wooden Boatbuilding: A Field Institute in Preserving the Past series explores the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area. Each hands-on individual workshop session is $85/person ($78 for members of Essex Heritage, Lowell's Boat Shop, or Maritime Gloucester.) Optional activities for each session will be $20 and available for purchase on-site the day of the session. This Field Institute is a program designed to expand the interpretive themes of the Salem Maritime and Saugus Ironworks National Historic Sites to a larger, regional scope within the Essex National Heritage Area.
