Join us for the in-person workshop Rigging a Tall Ship presented at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Join us for Rigging a Tall Ship, part of The Art of Wooden Boatbuilding: A Field Institute in Preserving the Past exploring the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area. This event is Rigging a Tall Ship. At Salem Maritime National Historic Site, you will: Learn about the principles of rigging design, operation and function for Friendship of Salem, a full-rigged ship and how these sometimes transfer to other vesselsExamine Friendship of Salem’s masts, yards, working tops and standing rigging, currently stored on site, to see how they are built and dressedPractice techniques in Pedrick's Storehouse (Friendship of Salem’s rigging and maintenance area) Learn the uses of and try your hand at knots, bends, hitches and worming, parceling and servingDiscuss a few of the most significant changes in building a laminated compared to a traditionally built vesselThe Art of Wooden Boatbuilding: A Field Institute in Preserving the Past series explores the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area. Each hands-on individual workshop session is $85/person ($78 for members of Essex Heritage, Lowell's Boat Shop, or Maritime Gloucester.) Optional activities for each session will be $20 and available for purchase on-site the day of the session. This Field Institute is a program designed to expand the interpretive themes of the Salem Maritime and Saugus Ironworks National Historic Sites to a larger, regional scope within the Essex National Heritage Area.
