Description

An evening with co-directors Paravel and Castaing-Taylor and their acclaimed film LEVIATHAN LEVIATHAN (Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Véréna Paravel, 2012, 87 min, DCP digital) LEVIATHAN plunges viewers into the sights and sounds of a New England fishing vessel, using mobile cameras, audacious framing, and heavily treated audio to explore the intersection of human, animal, and machine activity. An astonishing synthesis of form and content, LEVIATHAN challenges sentimental and anthropocentric representations of nature and labor, remapping the possibilities of documentary in the process. Since its 2012 debut, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s landmark film has served as a beacon to countless filmmakers drawn to the uncharted horizons of digital cinema, but this screening represents a rare opportunity to experience its dizzying synaesthetic power on the big screen. Courtesy of Cinema Guild Following the screening, co-directors Paravel and Castaing-Taylor will appear for discussion. Co-sponsored by the Hoffman Visiting Artist Series, the MFA in Documentary Media, the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and the Climate Crisis + Media Arts Working Group.
