Description
An overview of the latest science in the screening, assessment, diagnosis, and management of co-occurring disorders with COVID 19 content. Live and in-person only! Presented by Kenneth Roberts, MPS, LPCC, LADC with NUWAY. Kenneth as worked as a clinician, clinical supervisor and administrator in behavioral health for over 10 years. He is certified in Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for treatment of PTSD. Learn techniques and ways for you to implement ART into your practice to help individuals move on and beyond the challenges that keep holding them back in life. A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Master's Degree in Professional Studies (Co-Occurring Disorders), Kenneth serves as an adjunct faculty member to both the University of Minnesota and Metro State University. He works in his current role synthesizing a R.I.S.E (Recovery in Supportive Environments) model of care with community based resources to support improved clinical outcomes. Course Overview: This course is appropriate for master level therapists/counselors and can also be useful for case workers, peer recovery support specialists, social workers, and direct care staff. Session I: Identifying & Treating Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders (90 minutes) Mental illness is highly comorbid in people with addiction and associated with low rates of treatment engagement, retention, and completion. CODs are linked to numerous negative health outcomes and life circumstances, like elevated risk of homelessness, trauma, and self-harm. CODs are complex conditions, and clients can engage in services across a multitude of inpatient and outpatient settings. Counselors and other providers have at their disposal several empirically validated treatment approaches designed to address the full scope of needs of people with CODs, including services to reduce symptoms, increase abstinence, achieve stable housing, and help clients make meaningful connections with resources and networks of support in the community (SAMHSA TIP 42). • Defining SUD and Comorbidity • History & Stigma • Guiding principles for working with COD clients • Screening/Assessment • Diagnostic considerations • Evidence Based Treatment Models • Clinical strategies for working with COD clients Session II: Understanding & Addressing Post Pandemic Trauma Impact (90 minutes) The link between individual trauma and addiction is well documented. Research further supports this dynamic on a broad scale for population segments who have experienced catastrophic events. Epidemiological data highlights a potentiating increase in trauma/stressor disorder and substance abuse patterns immediately following and up to three years beyond events such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks. While these types of events typically effect significant portions of a population, none are comparable in scope, longevity, and potential impact to the Covid-19 Pandemic. In the days ahead, Behavioral Health professionals will be faced with unique challenges in treating a traumatic event experienced on a global scale. This presentation will define conceptualization of Pandemic Trauma and Stress Experience (PTSE), including differentiation from standard Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and examine existing evidence-based strategies applicable for individual providers, clinical teams, and overall agency settings in treating PTSE. • Pandemic Impact (SUD/Cod data/patterns) • Overview Pandemic Trauma and Stress Experience • Adverse Childhood Experiences & Co-Occurring Disorders (trauma focus) • Differential diagnosis (PTSD/PRSE) • Trauma Informed Care Principles • Evidence Based Treatment Modalities (CPT, PE, ART) • Promoting resiliency & post-traumatic growth
