RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — A Rancho Santa Margarita twin died in a fatal car wreck one week ago. Jason Carbonell, 23, was killed in a crash that followed a pursuit through Laguna Beach and ended in Dana Point. His brother, Brian Carbonell, remains hospitalized as of this report. Their mother has established a GoFundMe for their family, forced to plan a funeral for their son and aid his twin brother through a long recovery process. Brian suffered critical injuries including a broken leg and bruised lung, Cheryl Carbonell writes on the GoFundMe page. "The family is completely devastated and heartbroken." They have been buoyed by the support of friends, neighbors and those they've never met over the past week. "Please keep Brian in your thoughts and prayers as he fights to recover," she says. On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Laguna Beach police noticed a Toyota Corolla with its hazard lights on at the intersection of Glenneyre and Park Avenue. The driver had come to rest at a red curb, according to Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Jim Cota. A Laguna Beach Police officer pulled behind the vehicle, turned on lights, then knocked on the driver's window. Arianna Joyce, the driver, "looked at the officer, then drove off down Park Avenue to Catalina Street," Cota says. There, she stopped once again. He followed and informed her that he was conducting a traffic stop. "She began talking extremely fast, leading the officer to believe she was under the influence of drugs," Cota says. She refused to hand over her driver's license. According to Cota, when he ordered Joyce not to leave, she ignored the command, rolled up her window, and took off down Catalina Street. Officers pursued, believing she was driving under the influence. The woman headed westbound on Legion Street, threw her cell phone from the car window for unknown reasons, and then headed down South Coast Highway at a high-speed rate. The pursuit reached speeds of 100 miles per hour, Cota says. The watch commander canceled the pursuit upon hearing the speed of chase, according to Cota. Minutes later, Orange County Sheriff's Department officers reported a fatal collision at Coast Highway and Selva Road. The Corolla struck a Subaru Impreza occupied by Jason Carbonell, 23. Carbonell was extracted from the Subaru, and later died. His twin brother and girlfriend, as well as Joyce, were also hospitalized, according to the OC Register. Officers at the scene of the crash discovered narcotics inside Joyce's car. They also learned that there were "multiple warrants for her arrest, and priors for evading police," Cota says. "She is also restrained from Chris Martin, the lead singer of the music band Coldplay, due to multiple incidents of stalking." In 2019, a judge declared that she posed a "grave risk" to the singer, and that her Facebook page showed an "delusional belief" that she was "in a romantic relationship with Mr. Martin" according to a report from NBC4. It is not known why the Los Angeles resident was in Laguna Beach last week. She was placed under arrest and is being held on $2 million dollars bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 18.
