UPTON, MA — State and local police removed a suspicious device from a wooded area near a dam at Lake Maspenock on Sunday, authorities said.
A passerby found the device around 10 a.m. Sunday, prompting a response by Upton police and fire officials. The state police bomb squad also responded to help remove what police described as a "homemade destructive device."
Police did not immediately announce any arrests or charges related to the incident.
"The incident and origin of the device is under investigation by the Massachusetts state police fire and explosion investigation unit and the Upton police department," Upton Chief Michael Bradley said in a news release Sunday afternoon.
Upton, Milford and Hopkinton border the 234-acre lake, which is dammed at the southern end, where it drains as the Mill River. The dam was built in Milford in the 1830s.
