The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anemia), and can block blood flow causing pain (sickle cell crisis). The effects of SCD are not only physical, they are cognitive and emotional as well. Treatments for SCD include penicillin, hydroxyurea, and pain medications. The newest drug treatments, as of 2019, are ADAKVEO® (crizanlizumab-tmca) and Oxbryta (voxelotor). However, there is no universal cure for SCD. Bone marrow transplant has been successful in some patients. Current gene therapy trial is showing some promise. Until a cure is found, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America - Mobile Chapter, Inc (SCDAA-MC) will continue to provide support for those living in its service area. SCD affects approximately 100,000 individuals in the U.S. SCDAA-MC serves approximately 700 SCD clients in its nine-county service area of Alabama including: Mobile, Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Escambia, Monroe, and Washington.
