Description

MOKENA, IL — The Mokena Police Department is warning residents to be on the lookout for thieves who are targeting vehicles' catalytic converters in the village, according to Mokena Police Interim Chief Brian Benton. One recent theft involved a business in the 8900 block of West 192nd Street where five catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles parked on that business' lot sometime between March 15 and March 16, Benton said. A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle's exhaust system. Thieves target the part because of the high value of the metals inside of it, Benton said. It can takes under 60 seconds for a thief to remove the catalytic converter, Benton said. Residents should always park their vehicles in a garage whenever possible, or park in a well-lit, visible spot, Benton said. Residents are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they see or hear anything suspicious, Benton said.
