EL CERRITO, CA — The City of El Cerrito is aiming to raise $50,000 in local funds to bring back its July 4 fireworks and WorldOne celebration for the summer of 2022. If enough money is raised, the city will be able to host a July 4 fireworks celebration for the first time in two years. After coming back from the edge of bankruptcy in 2020 and 2021, when the city faced a deficit of up to $7 million, the El Cerrito City Council said that it wants the 4th of July Festival to be "cost-neutral as work on financial sustainability continues." The city said that it is hoping to keep the event admission free, and support musical performances and family entertainment. It also aims to keep costs low for local nonprofits and civic organizations to participate in the event and provide outreach to the community. As of March 15, the city has raised $4,010, or just 8 percent of its total goal.
