TUCSON, AZ — Two senior cyclists were killed in a hit-and-run Saturday morning in the Catalina Foothills area, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Office. Kenneth Cook, 74, and Gretchen Cook, 62, were both pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said. Ryan Machado, 26, the driver accused of hitting them and then fleeing the scene, was later arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, criminal damage and driving under the influence, according to the sheriff's office. The cooks were bicycling around 9:45 a.m. Saturday near Sunrise Drive and Pontatoc Road when they were hit by an SUV described by witnesses as a Cadillac Escalade, the sheriff's office said. Detectives found Machado in the Escalade suspected of hitting the Cooks near the intersection of River Road and Alvernon Road.
