$23.88 - $29.85 PER HOUR, DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS. FULL-TIME, MONDAY - FRIDAY, 7:00 AM TO 4:00 PM. POSITION DESCRIPTION Under the direct supervision of the Parks and Open Space Manager, the Turf and Landscape Technician will provide strategic turf and landscape management for the Town of Frederick, to ensure all of the Town’s landscaped areas are healthy, accessible and welcoming to the Town’s residents and visitors. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / FUNCTIONS The duties listed herein are illustrative of the essential duties of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. • Provide for the maintenance of all turfgrass in Town-maintained parks, including pesticide and fertilizer applications, seeding, aeration and mowing. • Provide for the maintenance of all Town-maintained landscape and streetscapes, including hardscapes, planting, pruning and pesticide and fertilizer applications. • Assist with the maintenance of all open spaces, including pesticide and fertilizer applications, mechanical vegetative control and trail maintenance. • Assist with the maintenance of Parks and Open Space facilities, including restrooms, the Skate Park, park amenities and playgrounds. • Assist the Public Works department with snow removal on streets, sidewalks and trails. • Availability to work on-call schedule when needed. • Other duties as assigned by the Parks and Open Space Manager and/or Director. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in the maintenance and upkeep of turf, landscaping, horticulture, open space and trails. Working knowledge of maintenance operations, services, and activities as they relate to the operation of the Town. • Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions. • Ability to use equipment and tools safely. • Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public. • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. • Ability to work independently and to complete daily scheduled work activities as required. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING • Graduation from high school or completion of a G.E.D. required. • At least three (3) years of experience working in the area(s) of park and open space maintenance, landscape maintenance, pesticide application, or a related field required. Previous experience working in a municipal Public Works or Parks department preferred. A combination of formal education and/or training in a related field may substitute for years of experience. • Must possess a valid Colorado Certified Operator Pesticide Applicator’s license (in several required categories) at the time of application, or within 12 months of hire. • Must possess a valid Colorado Class “B” commercial driver’s permit with airbrake and tanker endorsements at the time of application, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must have a full license with proper endorsements within one year of hire. Must maintain proof of a safe driving record for continued employment. • Flagger certification, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. • Forklift certification, or ability to obtain with 12 months of hire. PHYSICAL / WORKING ENVIRONMENT The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. • This position includes sitting, standing, walking, crouching, squatting, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing, and balancing on a frequent to constant basis. Due to the physical nature of this position, sufficient physical stamina, mobility, and dexterity are required, as is the ability to hear and see to safely perform assigned tasks. • Must be able to frequently lift and or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds. • Must be able to read Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) before handling toxic or caustic chemicals or any other material requiring an MSDS. • Work is frequently performed in inclement weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from over 100 degrees to below zero. Work may occasionally be performed indoors, but will most frequently be performed outdoors. • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and vehicular traffic.
