Course Details: Familiarity with nonprofit accounting procedures can strengthen your confidence as a nonprofit leader. Financial acumen is essential to your work and the health and sustainability of your organization. This course simplifies the nonprofit accounting process to help you to build your leadership capacity. You will learn fundamental financial and budgeting terms and concepts, and elements of financial statements including the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow and cash position. You will leave with a stronger understanding of the accounting cycle, financial risks, independent audit process, budget process, significance of Form 990, financial management decision-making, and financial control processes. These are the vital skills that any nonprofit leader will need to lead with confidence. Instructor: John J. These organizations are the community leaders in providing human resource management, payroll, and related solutions to businesses in Northern Illinois. Together with John Morrissey Accountants, which is also under his management, these organizations comprise the Morrissey Family Businesses, a family-owned enterprise, headquartered in Rockford, Il, that is dedicated to providing quality business solutions based on quality business relationships. Morrissey is a certified public accountant with more than thirty-five years of business, financial and Fortune 500 executive management experience. He has developed a broad expertise in accounting, management, financial analysis, payroll, human resources, and business strategy. His leadership, enthusiasm, creativity, and problem-solving abilities are demonstrated every day in the variety of challenges posed by clients, colleague professionals, and these growing enterprises. He is quick to share his professional experiences in service to the community. Morrissey joined the Morrissey Family Businesses in 1998 after more than six years as an executive with Gateway 2000, a Fortune 500 marketer and manufacturer of personal computers. While with Gateway, Morrissey served as Treasurer and Director of Accounting & Finance and was instrumental in taking the company public in 1993. Following an international assignment in 1995-96, where he served as Managing Director of Gateway Australia, Morrissey held the positions of Director of Strategic Planning for the company and Director of Sales Operations in its Major Accounts Division. Morrissey began his professional career in 1985 in public accounting with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). He worked with that firm for seven years in Omaha and New York City. Morrissey is an honors graduate of Creighton University (B.S.B.A., Accounting) in Omaha, Nebraska. He remains a member of the AICPA and Nebraska Society of CPAs. He is currently the chairman of the board for Northwest Bank of Rockford and a director of Foresight Financial Group, a publicly held bank holding company. He has been a Trustee for the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and is a past Chairman of the Board of the Easter Seals Children’s Development Center in Rockford, IL. He has been recognized for his active community volunteerism for various health care, religious, educational, and social service organizations. **This is one of the five courses in the Certificate in Nonprofit Management Program. Take any of the five courses individually or complete the entire series. Courses may be taken in any order and attendance credit does not expire. Upon successful completion of all five courses (90% overall attendance) participants will receive a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from The Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence at Northern Illinois University.
