Description

Join Chicago Studies for a special screening of Southeast: A City Within a City! The Southeast side of Chicago is an often overlooked and stigmatized neighborhood of the city, blocked by an overcast of misguided interpretation. This documentary aims to help shed light on this neighborhood's near-mythic tale. This film brings together soldiers, scholars, gangsters, musicians and politicians from the Southeast side’s past and present. This is more than just history; this is a hands-on exploration of what it felt like to live here. See how the streets were then, and how they've evolved to what they are now. About Steven Walsh: I’m a Mexican-American writer, producer, and director from the Southeast side of Chicago. And I take extreme pride in my climb up from rather humble beginnings, defining stereotypes, and emerging as a Johns Hopkins graduate and two-time Emmy award-winning producer. I strive to break ground in uncharted creative territory through multi-perspective storytelling, and have made it a mission to shed light on stigmatized neighborhoods like the one I grew up in. I hope to be known for speaking up for the silenced voice, in everything I do and make, and I plan to raise up any talented youth I come across along the journey. My concentrations are in education, writing, directing, and producing. And above all, family is the most important thing in the world to me.
