Press release from the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services:
March 18, 2022
The City of Colorado Springs' Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department reopened phase 1 of the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail improvement project Friday. The reopened trail section stretches from the overpass at I-25 and Rockrimmon Boulevard to Criterium Bicycles. Work began on the 1.25-mile project in October. The full project, which runs north to the confluence of Cottonwood and Monument creeks, near Pikes Peak Indian Motorcycle, remains on track to fully reopen in May 2022.
A detour remains in place while work completes on the second and third phases. The designated detour route utilizes Corporate Drive and the western sidewalk along North Nevada Avenue. Trail users are asked to follow detour signage.
The project is replacing deteriorated asphalt with a wider and more durable concrete surface, plus an adjacent gravel running trail. Damaged bridge decking and handrails are also being replaced, and several drainage and stormwater improvements are being made.
This work is funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. The estimated total cost is $1 million.
