Press release from the City of San Antonio: Thursday, March 17, 2022 CONTACT: Connie Swann, 210-207-6122 [email protected] SAN ANTONIO (March 17, 2022) – San Antonio Parks and Recreation is one step closer to connecting the Salado Creek Greenway trails north of Ft. Sam Houston and those south of the base. As part of the Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Equestrian Center located on Ft. Sam Houston, twenty-six horse paddocks are currently located within the Salado Creek Greenway trail route and will be relocated prior to construction of the greenway trail project. City Council approved the relocation and construction of the horse paddocks on Ft. Sam Houston property and authorized the execution of an amended easement to accommodate the trail alignment. The amended easement will allow construction of the horse paddocks outside the greenway trail easement, in addition to the construction of the Salado Creek Greenway Trail through Ft. Sam Houston located in District 2. Construction of the horse paddocks is anticipated to begin spring 2022 and estimated to be completed by fall 2022. "The relocation of the horse paddocks and amended easement will ultimately allow for the much-anticipated completion of the Salado Creek Greenway trail north and south of the base," said Homer Garcia III, Director of Parks and Recreation. "We want to thank JBSA for their continued support and partnership on this project as we continue to fulfill the vision of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail system." Construction of the 3.7-mile hike and bike trail is anticipated to begin in 2023. A second construction contract will come before council for the building of the trail. The completion of this trail segment will offer trail users approximately 35 miles of connected trail to explore along the Salado Creek Greenway. In total, 86 miles of greenway trails are currently completed. To view greenway trails map visit the website. This press release was produced by the City of San Antonio.
