Press release from Hennepin County Library: March 17, 2022 Women's History Month was first designated by Congress in 1987. Hennepin County Library celebrates Women's History Month with displays, digital collections and book lists. Digital collections Gratia Alta Countryman Collection - Gratia Alta Countryman (1866-1953) was the third director of the Minneapolis Public Library and the founder of the Hennepin County Library. In 1904 she succeeded James Kendall Hosmer as chief librarian, becoming the nation's first female head librarian. Barbara Flanagan Collection - Photographs featuring Minneapolis journalist Barbara Flanagan, her family, and many of the individuals she met and interviewed during her long career. Violet Glyer Collection - Over 300 photographs recording the experiences of a U.S. Army nurse in Europe and North Africa during World War II. At 35 years of age, Glyer enlisted as a nurse to serve in the U.S. Army shortly after Pearl Harbor. She served in the 26th General Hospital Unit (University of Minnesota) from 1942 through 1945.
