LINCOLNWOOD, IL — Carjackers robbed a Lincolnwood family at gunpoint after they returned to their home Friday night, police said.
Around 9:40 p.m., a red sedan pulled up in the 3900 block of Estes Avenue as the family's Audi SUV pulled into their driveway, according to Lincolnwood police.
Two masked gunmen got out of the red car and demanded valuables, including cellphones and a wallet, Chief Jay Parrott said. The carjackers grabbed the keys to the SUV before both cars fled north on Crawford Avenue.
The Audi was found in the 6100 block of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago on Saturday morning and investigators have begun processing it for forensic evidence, Parrott said.
Investigators have not determined where the red sedan wound up. Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Lincolnwood Police Department at 847-673-2167.
Friday night's incident was Lincolnwood's first carjacking of 2020, although there has been an uptick across the Chicago area this year, the chief said.
"Carjacking a family — we're obviously not immune to that. We've seen other towns have similar instances where not only do they carjack the vehicle but a minor was left in the vehicle, a child," Parrott said, "which is obviously a worst-case scenario."
