Description

JULIA MORGAN: A VERY PERSONAL VIEW. In this custom presentation Ms. Kastner will reveal the inspiring story of Julia Morgan's private life. Victoria Kastner will reveal the inspiring story of Julia Morgan's private life, as gleaned from the letters Julia exchanged with her family and friends, as well as from the observations she wrote in her private diaries. In this presentation, customized for the Hillside Club, Kastner will provide an especially in-depth and intimate view of this famous architect. Ms. Kastner will be calling on materials she researched for her just-released book: Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect (Chronicle Books, 2022), which provides the first in-depth look at Morgan’s fascinating private life as well as her remarkable professional career. It is filled with never-before-told anecdotes and gorgeous photography by Alexander Vertikoff. Copies of this volume will be available for purchase that evening, and Ms. Kastner will be available to sign any copies purchased at the Club. The material covered in this in-person presentation will largely differ from the March 23rd webinar hosted by BAHA. Julia Morgan enthusiasts are encouraged to attend both presentations. Tea and cookies provided after the talk, provided that current CoVID rules allow. We are delighted to welcome Victoria Kastner back to the Hillside Club for our first in-person Fireside presentation in 2022. Currently an independent author and researcher, Ms. Kastner was the official historian at Hearst Castle for more than thirty years. She is also the author of the definitive trilogy on its history, published by Abrams Books: Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House; Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land; and Hearst Ranch: Family, Land, and Legacy. She is a sought-after lecturer who has spoken at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as making many appearances on television and film. Ms. Kastner has a master’s degree in Public History with a specialty in architectural history from U.C. Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree in museum management from George Washington University. She has also published works on the Beverly Hills Hotel, Bernard Maybeck’s Palace of Fine Arts, and the novels of Charles Dickens.
