ROMEOVILLE, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that northbound traffic on I-55 near the Weber Road Interchange will be shifted to the right starting Wednesday night, April 22. Traffic will also be shifted to the right in the southbound lanes starting Monday night, April 27.
The shift will occur between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. both nights, a news release on the issue said. Drivers on I-55 should expect delays, changing lanes and intermittent stops during these times. Extra time should be allotted for any commute through this area, and drivers are reminded to pay attention to road workers and posted construction speed limits.
"The lane shifts are necessary to construct a center pier for a new Weber Road bridge that willallow the interchange to be converted into a diverging diamond design," the department's news release said. "Exit and entrance ramps will remain open during this stage of the work, which will be in place until early December."
The lane shifts are also necessary to allow for work on a larger project on Weber Road, the department release said. That project involves adding a third lane to each direction of Weber Road between Romeo Road and Rodeo Road. Improvements such as modernized traffic lights and a barrier median are also planned for the road. The Weber Road project is expected to be finished in early 2022.
