Press release from Oakland Schools: March 18, 2022 Winner advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee The Oakland Schools' Scripps Regional Spelling Bee was held Sunday, March 13, 2022, at the Flagstar Strand Theatre in Pontiac. The competition lasted 11 rounds and featured 65 champion spellers from across Oakland County. Victor Andrews, an 8th-grade student from East Middle School in Farmington Hills won the competition. He earned several prizes, including a large trophy, a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, and a 2022 U.S. Mint Coin proof set donated by Mr. Jay Sugarman in honor of his father. The winning word was Studite, which can be used as a noun or adjective. The two runners-up were Adeline Dagg, a 7th-grade student from Abbott Middle School in West Bloomfield, and Minah Mahjoory, a 6th-grade student from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in Farmington. Both were awarded a trophy. Andrews will represent Oakland County in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in late May, and will compete against hundreds of other spellers from across the country.
