Looking for a pet to add to my family and give a forever home

I just moved into a big 3 bedroom house with a yard and i am wanting to get a companion/pet for me and my family and give him or her a forever home. i have been considering getting either a cat, or a dog, a rabbit, or a ferret. I just am unsure what would be best for my family. I was gonna look for a rescue but haven't seen any and the pet stores don't have much of anything or even the local newspaper, craigslist, or even the bulletin board.
