Tree Removal Along US 101: Nighttime Lane Closures In Petaluma

PETALUMA, CA — An eight-week Caltrans project to remove trees along U.S. Highway 101 in Petaluma is underway. The work began Feb. 24 and requires nighttime lane closures on U.S. 101 between Lakeville Street/state Highway 116 and Corona Road in Petaluma. The tree removal is being done to provide space for Caltrans to build soundwalls for the Marin-Sonoma Narrows project, which involves adding carpool lanes on the 101 between Windsor and Novato. Crews started work just south of E. Washington Street; work will progress north from there. To provide safe working room for crews, the closures include the right lane and adjacent on-off ramps. Northbound closures are scheduled from 1o p.m. until 6 a.m. Southbound closures are scheduled from 7 p.m. until 4 a.m. "The MSN project has been separated into individual construction contracts, allowing work to proceed while funding is appropriated," Caltrans District 4 Spokesman Jeff Weiss said. "Currently, Caltrans is working between Lakeville Street/Highway 116 and Corona Road." Work on the $78.8-million project includes adding a carpool lane in each direction, constructing a new bridge over the SMART corridor railroad tracks, and adding soundwalls. Construction on this project began in October 2019 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2023. Transportation partners include Caltrans, the Federal Highway Administration, Sonoma County Transportation Authority, Transportation Authority of Marin, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, California Transportation Commission, Marin and Sonoma counties, and the cities of Novato and Petaluma.
