PLAINFIELD, IL — A downtown Plainfield business is expected to reopen Friday after a coffee bean roaster caught fire in the basement, Plainfield fire officials said. Fire Chief Jon Stratton said an employee at Krema in the 24000 block of Lockport Street called just before 8 a.m. to report smoke in the basement of the building.
Stratton said the fire alarm also went off as crews were on their way to the business. Employees were evacuating as firefighters arrived, and Stratton credited a coffee shop worker with partially putting out the fire.
"The employee did a good job with the fire extinguisher," Stratton said.
There was no structural damage to the building, and Stratton said fire crews used large fans to air out smoke that got into another unit in the Lockport Street building.
Health and building inspectors were at Krema after the fire, and Stratton said he expected the business to reopen Friday morning.
