PETALUMA, CA — A quick response by firefighters and a working fire sprinkler system limited the damage from a structure fire Monday night at Petaluma Creamery, the Petaluma Fire Department said. Firefighters and an ambulance crew were dispatched at 7:09 p.m. Monday to reports of the fire at 621 Western Ave. and were on scene within five minutes, Petaluma FD Battalion Chief Chad Costa said in a news release. Costa said creamery staff called 911 when they smelled smoke then noticed a fire. Firefighters confirmed there was a fire burning in the rafters above a decommissioned boiler, with flames extending to the bottom side of the roof decking, Costa said. Because the fire sprinkler system activated shortly after staff noticed the fire, most of it was extinguished when firefighters got there. When crews investigated, however, they found some active fire above the sprinkler heads in the attic space and roof decking, Costa said. Crews put out the remaining fire within 15 minutes of their arrival. To ensure it was completely out, a ladder truck crew removed a 15 x 15-foot piece of the roof that was damaged by the blaze. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday. The city of Petaluma Building Department assessed the structure for damage, which Costa said was limited to $25,000. "Quick response by fire department personnel and a working fire sprinkler system limited the damage ... and there were no injuries to the occupants or responding firefighters," Costa said. The Petaluma Fire Department thanked Rancho Adobe Fire and Cal Fire for their assistance at the incident and for providing station coverage to ensure the city was protected.
