Description

Join us for a Social Hour with those who love the environment and OKC! April features Mary Bixler, Scissortail Park Farmer's Market Manager. OKC Beautiful's Sustainability Social Hour is for those who love the environment and our city. Each session is centered around networking with those who have a passion for and want to learn more about environmental stewardship topics. Each sessions features a Q&A session with a guest speaker. April's featured guest is Mary Bixler, Manager of the Farmers Market at Scissortail Park. Mary grew up on a small farm in Jones, Oklahoma, where she fell in love with gardening, regenerative agriculture and food security through local food systems. Mary groomed her passion into a professional path during her time at the University of Central Oklahoma through the STLR (Student Transformative Learning Records) program. STLR enabled Mary to conduct a three-year funded research initiative that built a community garden and supplied to the campus’s food pantry, advocated for the institutionalization of local food procurement, and created a recurring community event under the Office of Sustainability called the Local Food Summit. Mary worked with the national nonprofit organization the Real Food Challenge and Uprooted & Rising, and now works as the Farmers Market Manager at the Farmers Market at Scissortail Park. She firmly believes in the power of community building and seeks to continue working to address the complex and multi-dimensional issues surrounding hunger and local food systems. Sustainability Social Hour is every second Wednesday of the month. Location changes each month. Visit www.okcbeautiful.com/sustainability-social-hour to learn more.
