Harriet Daggett reviews “Eleanor in the Village”
Daggett reviews Jan Jarboe Russell’s account of Eleanor Roosevelt’s move to New York’s Greenwich Village in 1920, abandoning her duties as a mother of five and undergoing a transformation — emotional, political and sexual. She details the motivations and desires that drew Roosevelt to the Village and how the mood, sensibility and inhabitants influenced the First Lady’s perception of herself and shaped her political views for more than four decades, up to her death in 1962.
