April Events at West Florida Public Libraries Beanstack: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Continuous – Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There is more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement. Bad Poetry Contest for Tweens and Teens! Friday, April 1-Saturday, April 30 – Virtual, Access the Form Here Ever thought you would win a prize for being BAD at something? Do you like to write? Are you in Middle or High school? Then, participate in West Florida Public Libraries' BAD POETRY CONTEST from April 1 to April 30 in honor of National Poetry Month. Here's what to do: Write the worst poem you can! It must be original to you to be the "worst," so don't copy anyone else. Submit your poem in-person at one of our 7 library branches or online using this form between April 1 and April 30. If you submit at a library, be sure to include your name, your grade, and a usable phone number on your submission. Only one submission per person, please. One middle school winner and one high school winner will be selected. An honorable mention for both categories will also be selected. This contest will be judged by library staff. Winners will be contacted by May 13th! The best BAD poems will be posted on WFPL's social media. Examples of bad poets include William McGonagall, Amanda McKittrick Ros, Philip James Bailey, Mary Elizabeth Coleridge, and Margaret Cavendish. An example of bad poetry is Vogon Poetry from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Inspiration for this program came from the Alfred Joyce Kilmer Memorial Bad Poetry Contest. Legal Services of North Florida Tuesday, April 5, 10:30-11:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is one of seven legal services organizations in Florida. Our program in the 16 counties in the North Florida works hard to meet the legal needs of children, elderly, victims of abuse and those with disabilities. LSNF's priority areas of representation include support for families; preserving the home; maintaining economic stability; safety, stability and health; and serving populations with special vulnerabilities. These translate to cases involving family law, housing, public benefits, employment, education, and health care issues. LSNF's purpose is to provide case representation and advice to low-income persons in civil matters only. LSNF serves only the low-income and those with certain vulnerable circumstances including the elderly. LSNF never charges a fee for our services to a client. Fairy Houses Saturday, April 9, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. – Pensacola Library Join staff at Pensacola Library for a Saturday afternoon craft session. Do you believe in fairies? We do! Slow Ride at Pensacola Library Saturday, April 9, 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library Join us for an escorted bicycle ride through downtown Pensacola. We are hosting a Bike Pensacola Slow Ride, the most popular ride in town! Come explore the scenic streets of Pensacola's historic neighborhoods on this fun and leisurely ride. The ride will last about an hour and ten minutes. No one will be "left behind." After the ride, enjoy music, get some swag, and participate in kid-friendly activities. There is no fee or registration to participate. Please be mindful of Bike Pensacola's rules: Children ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult; no kids under 10 on their own bicycle. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. No dogs or other pets (they're not covered by our insurance). Bicycles only please, and only self-propelled or electric-assist (trikes and elliptigos are ok). No bicycles with training wheels, Segways, skateboards, scooters, or gasoline-powered motorized bicycles. No alcohol consumption during the Ride. Please make certain that both you and your bicycle are healthy and well-maintained so that you can safely ride about six miles. Please do not attempt the Ride if you cannot ride six miles at 6 mph.
