BELLMORE, NY — Students at Mepham High School joined the annual St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser where they cut their hair for charity. Money from the event supports childhood cancer researchers. Peter Mayo, a junior at Mepham, took part in the "Chop Your Locks for Charity" fundraiser at the school on Wednesday. "We need to do whatever we can to raise awareness," Mayo said. Mepham created teams for the fundraiser. Mayo chose the "Courage for Carsyn," which donated more than $11,000 from their haircuts. "Carsyn's sister Cayden is also a junior at Mepham and his other sister Camryn plays soccer with my sister Bianca," he said. "I have seen the impact childhood cancer has on everyone it touches." Carsyn is a 12-year-old from Bellmore, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. "Carsyn has been through so much over the past few years, he shows us all how to fight and what it means to be a true hero," Mayo said.
