PURCELLVILLE, VA — A Purcellville resident remains hospitalized after getting rescued by firefighters from the third-floor window of a townhouse that caught fire Thursday evening, according to fire officials. The resident and a firefighter were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The firefighter has since been released, while the resident is listed in critical but stable condition, according to Inova Loudoun Hospital. At about 6:45 p.m. Thursday, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from the resident who said they were trapped in their bedroom due to the townhouse fire on Oliver Court in Purcellville. Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System units responded from Purcellville, Round Hill, Lovettsville, Hamilton, Philomont, Leesburg and Moorefield. Units from Mount Weather also were dispatched to the fire, along with numerous command officers. Smoke was coming out of the front of the townhouse when firefighters arrived, fire officials said. The resident was removed from the house through the third-floor window onto a ladder. During the rescue, a firefighter experienced an emergency and had to be removed through the same window as the resident, according to the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System. Residents were cleared from the townhouses on either side of the townhouse that was on fire. Fire and Rescue units remained on the scene, completing salvage and overhaul operations, as the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal's Office conducted its investigation. The investigation determined that the fire was accidental, caused by a failure of a toaster on a kitchen countertop, according to officials. The Fire Marshal's Office estimated the damage from the fire totaled $200,000. Two adults and three children were displaced as a result of the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
