DARIEN, CT — Darien's town documents will likely be getting a makeover soon. The town used a software to find gender-specific words in its charter, and pending a passed resolution they will be replaced with neutral language, The Darien Times reported. The town first introduced the idea in a resolution last summer, which outlined its plans to review its charter and code using a software called Municode. Municode found over 450 instances of gendered language within its town charter and code of ordinances, according to The Darien Times — words like "chairman" and "mankind." And if the Representative Town Meeting approves a resolution to adopt the changes, those words will be replaced with language like "chair" and "humankind," the newspaper said. "It just seemed like it was time to make some changes, to bring the documents up into a current standard," Frank Kemp, chair of the RTM's Town Government Structure and Administration Committee, told The Darien Times.
