HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — The men's basketball team at St. Peter's University in Jersey City has advanced to the second round of the NCAA college basketball tournament, and Gov. Phil Murphy took note this week.
The 15th-seeded team beat #2-ranked Kentucky on Thursday night to advance to Saturday night's game.
Murphy posted on Facebook about this particularly mad turn of "March Madness" events:
"Awesome game! What a win for the Peacocks!" noted a fan in response.
"Shaheen Holloway, great player, great coach," said another, of the team's coach.
Sports publications called the win "historic."
They also called it a "Cinderella story," noting that St. Peter's has a $1.6 million basketball budget, one of the lowest in Division I programs, and much lower than the salary of Kentucky Wildcats Coach John Calipari ($8 million). Kentucky's budget is more than $16 million.
The Peacocks, seeded #15, will take on #7 Murray State Racers in the second round of the NCAA tournament Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
