BROOKFIELD, IL – On St. Patrick's Day, the animals at Brookfield Zoo got shamrock-shaped and green-themed treats.
Normla, a 7-year-old Cape porcupine, and western lowland gorillas received shamrock-shaped treats made of a complete-balanced biscuit and gelatin, according to a zoo news release.
The gorillas' bedding, which is wood wool, was festively dyed green in celebration of the holiday.
The grey seals and bottlenose dolphins received St. Patrick's Day treats made of gelatin, ice and green-dyed squid, the release said.
The Animal Care and Programs staff is always creating different opportunities to physically and mentally stimulate the animals, according to the release. One way, the zoo said, is by providing them with a variety of different enrichment and food items they normally do not receive.
