Woman Dies After Jumping In Detroit River To Save Friend: Police

DETROIT — A 20-year-old woman drowned Friday morning after she jumped into the Detroit River, trying to save her friend who slipped and fell into the water, officials said. Officials said three women, believed to be friends, were near Alfred Brush Ford Park on Lenox and Scripps streets at 3:45 a.m. in Detroit's Jefferson Chalmers area, when one of them slipped and fell into the river. That's when officials said the other two women jumped in the river to try and rescue the first woman who fell into the water. They were able to save her, but one of the rescuers did not survive, officials said. The two surviving women, ages 26 and 35 were rescued by officials and taken to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in stable condition Friday morning. While the investigation is still in its early stages, officials did not say whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident. Officials also said they are not aware of any criminal activity in connection with the incident.
