ALAMEDA, CA — The Coast Guard Foundation is raising money to build a K-9 memorial. A $10,000 donation was kicked in by board member Fred Brodsky toward the $50,000 goal. In its fundraising appeal, the foundation said, "With your donation, this memorial will be where the ashes of service dogs can be laid to rest by their handlers. It will honor not only the dogs that dedicated their lives to their country, but their handlers as well." K-9 Veterans Day 2022 was celebrated on March 13. "This day was established to recognize and celebrate the contributions of service animals," the foundation reports. "And the Coast Guard has a long tradition of employing K-9s in the protection of our country, dating as far back as World War II. These dogs are highly trained and crucial to ensuring our national security." At midday Thursday, $39,495 had been raised. If you would like to contribute, click here to make a donation. Your donation may be made in honor of, or in memory of, a person or dog.
