JOB DESCRIPTION: FREIGHT PROCESSOR/FREIGHT CHECKER – TERMINAL DEPARTMENT OF AN OCEAN FREIGHT COMPANY Description of the General Operation: Coastal Transportation Inc. (CTI) operates several ocean going freighters carrying cargo between Seattle and Western Alaska. As part of this operation, CTI owns a terminal on Seattle’s Lake Washington Ship Canal. Freight is received at our Seattle terminal by truck for loading onto the freighters for delivery up to Alaska. Similarly, cargo coming down from Alaska is unloaded at the Seattle terminal then distributed via truck and train all over the U.S..All of this cargo needs to be accounted for in a variety of ways. Northbound cargo (from Seattle to Alaska) must be received, shipper/consignee information and destination/dock information is recorded. Freight is also tallied, weighed, measured and prepared for shipment aboard our vessels. Southbound cargo (primarily frozen seafood from Alaska to Seattle) is offloaded from the vessel, tallied and sorted and stowed in either containers or railcars for shipment to consignees. Position: The position is for an entry level freight processor in the Terminal department who will assist in the operations described above. Responsibilities and Duties: Handle and sign receiving documents (shipper’s paperwork) for data collection Receive freight and properly tally, tag and prepare for shipment via vessel, container or railcar Sort, stack, wrap & band freight (up to 65 lbs regularly) for shipment Inventory and load all freight in appropriate area (warehouse or staging area) or conveyance (container, railcar) Assist in keeping work areas clean Attributes needed for the Job: Attention to detail Desire and drive to get the job done right Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers Ability to work effectively in a fast- paced environment Capability to handle several different operations Skills/Experience Required: 1-2 years of similar or relevant experience Willingness to learn a variety of operations relating to freight processing Ability to drive a forklift as necessary Basic written and verbal communication skills Ability to identify or categorize freight based on supplied information and visual cues Work Schedule: Generally Monday – Friday 7AM to 3PM. Overtime necessary at times. Work Environment: The job typically requires the ability to lift and push heavy objects. Work is performed in a warehouse and outdoors in all weather conditions. The employee may also be exposed to loud noises, dangerous machinery and equipment and situations which require the utmost attentions to safety.
