PITTSBURGH, PA — The Steelers Super Bowl hopes took a major hit in the team's sloppy 19-14 win Wednesday over the Baltimore Ravens when star linebacker Bud Dupree suffered a season-ending injury.
Dupree suffered a torn ACL in a non-contact play. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Thursday that he won't play again in 2020.
Dupree had 31 tackles and eight sacks through 11 games. He was playing the season on a franchise tag and is slated to become a free agent in March. The injury could derail his chances to get a lucrative multi-year contract from the Steelers or another team.
Dupree is the second starting linebacker to suffer a season-ending injury. Devin Bush also went down with a torn ACL in the Steelers 38-7 win over the Cleveland Browns in October.
Rookie Alex Highsmith likely will start at outside linebacker in Dupree's place. Olasunkanmi Adeniyi also is a candidate.
Apparently aware of the severity of Dupree's injury, many of his teammates took to Twitter Wednesday evening to offer messages of support.
