Village Bans Those Under 21 From Possessing Tobacco, Nicotine

PALATINE, IL — Nearly one year after the Illinois General Assembly adopted a new law making it illegal to sell chewing tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, and nicotine-based products to anyone under the age of 21, Palatine Village Council members approved a local ordinance during Monday night's village council meeting centered on a loophole within the state's law. According to the Village, there isn't a provision in the law related to the possession of tobacco and other alternative nicotine products for those under 21. Village council members Monday night approved the ordinance of prohibiting those under 21 from possessing these products, one of which the Village said is something the Palatine Police Department and administration have recommended be be prohibited by local ordinance, adding that this could be achieved under the Village's Home Rule Authorities.
