Description

PALATINE, IL — A local ordinance prohibiting anyone under 21 years old from buying tobacco products is now in effect in Palatine. As of Aug. 1, police are now issuing local ordinance citations to those who violate the legislation. Palatine Village Council members approved the local ordinance in June during a village council meeting centered on a loophole within a state law adopted last year by the Illinois General Assembly. According to the Village, there isn't a provision in the law related to the possession of tobacco and other alternative nicotine products for those under 21. Village officials believe correcting this loophole would provide more clarity for those under 21. "Since the new ordinance went into effect, we have not issued any citations in regards to the purchase of tobacco products under the age of 21," Palatine Police Department Commander Dave Weeks told Patch.
