PITTSBURGH, PA — Target will take the next step in its proposed Downtown Pittsburgh store next week when the retailer seeks Pittsburgh Planning Commission approval to proceed with the project.
The store will be located at one of Downtown's most prominent locations - the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street in a building rich in retail history, the former Kaufmann's-Macy's department store.
Those expecting a shopping experience comparable to suburban Target locations likely will be disappointed. The new Downtown store will take up approximately 20,000 square feet of the building's first floor. A typical Target shopping center location is about 135,000 square feet.
The primary entrance will be on Smithfield, with a secondary entrance on Fifth Avenue. Both will use existing entries from the building's department store days. Loading will occur on Smithfield Street.
All of the sidewalk on Smithfield between Fifth and Forbes avenues will be closed during construction, as will a portion of the sidewalk on Fifth and Forbes. Documents submitted to the planning commission indicate the closures are necessary for storefront window improvements as well as materials conveyance, site maintenance, and debris-dumpster maintenance.
The store is expected to open next year.
Target's only other location in the city is in East Liberty. The chain has one just over the city line at The Waterfront in Homestead.
