Susan Rich :: Gallery of Postcards and Maps and Kelli Russell Agodon :: Dialogues with Rising Tides Susan Rich :: Gallery of Postcards and Maps & Kelli Russell Agodon :: Dialogues with Rising Tides Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m. :: Live & In-Person at Elliott Bay Book Company. Registration is not required. Susan Rich and Kelli Russell Agodon, two superb poets of Seattle and home country across the water from Seattle give this joint in person reading from their new books. Both, in addition to their own work as poets, have done much in other roles to aid and abet others’ work, and the place of poetry in the scheme of things. Susan Rich is here with Gallery of Postcards and Maps: New and Selected Poems (Salmon Poetry), which carries with it an introduction by Ilya Kaminsky and is drawn from her four earlier collections, along with new work. “The new and selected poems of Gallery of Postcards and Maps introduce themselves with a warmth that deepens into wisdom. Susan Rich finds music in everything inside and outside her windows: Leonora Carrington, Vegetarian Vampires, lovers and ex-lovers, Lorca and Courbet. This book displays the hallmarks of her oeuvre: her mastery of form; her acuity of heart and eye. These terrific poems are full of compassion, lyricism and attention. The selected reflects an ever-present restlessness of spirit, flesh, and intellect.”—Terrance Hayes. A recipient of numerous awards, in the US and beyond, a professor at Highline College (where she also directs the Highline Listens reading series), co-founder (with Kelli Russell Agodon) and director of Poets on the Coast: A Weekend Writing Retreat for Women, her working life beyond academia has taken her around much of the world, doing Amnesty International work, election supervision in Bosnia Herzegovina, and human rights work in Gaza and the West Bank. Kelli Russell Agodon writes, edits, designs books, and is co-founder of Two Sylvias Press - and is also the author of a stellar fourth collection of her own poems, Dialogues with Rising Tides (Copper Canyon Press). “In her piercing fourth collection, Agodon explores intertwined anxieties—a family history of mental illness, looming environmental collapse, the inadequacies of love—with care and understated humor… Despite the tragedies at the center of this book, Agodon captures the universality of dark emotions and offers a collection full of hope.”—Publishers Weekly. “We know it is treacherous out there, and we know we could benefit from some sort of guide. In this book, Kelli Russell Agodon throws her light around the roiling waters. These poems are keenly attentive, and witty, and wise. They don’t shy away from revealing the dangers this ship we’re in is heading toward, but they’re also not afraid to tell us that they love us. They’ve been constructed to help us. If you let them, they might save you today.”—Camille T. Dungy, Orion Magazine.
