He identifies more with a geriatric gentleman than the youthful persona many modern hip-hop artists portray. In 2014, Kincy was homeless. He describes it as an enlightening era that allowed him to focus on himself and his music. His 2016 EP, The Perils, is based on his experience. He later got a gig teaching rap at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. Now, he is a father of two and just released a new album, The Peacock Honey, which features 10 bouncy, Bay Area-tinged tracks" -Phoenix Magazine Old Man Saxon is a rapper from Denver, recently featured on the hit Netflix series Rhythm + Flow, featuring Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, and TI. Saxon’s been a rapper since he was 13. His music has been featured on HBO's Silicon Valley, Netflix’s hit film Someone Great, and Madden commercials. The music video for his hit single “The Perils” had over 100,000 YouTube hits in its first 24 hours of release. Shaina Shepherd Shaina Shepherd is a singer, songwriter, vocal teacher, and community organizer in Seattle, WA. Known for her pervasive style as front-woman to soul-grunge band BEARAXE, her notable vocal stylings have brought her into various creative spaces — from collaborating with Duff McKagan, Chong The Nomad, and Acid Tongue to sharing stages with rock stars like Dave Matthews and Thunderpussy to being a soloist with the classical ensembles around the country. Inspired by the parallels between gospel and garbage metal, Shaina Shepherd is not your average vocalist. Living in the city where both Soundgarden and Quincy Jones cut their teeth, Shaina lends her soulful voice to projects of all genres. Inspired by Nina Simone's commitment to representing the times with the ivories at her fingers, Shaina Shepherd tells heartfelt stories of love, loss, and personal power. She describes herself as an anthem artist translating pivotal moments in human history through her unique form of poetry. Her biggest inspirations are often from Mark Twain, James Weldoyn Johnson, Maya Angelou. A teacher at heart, Shaina's songs often include a moment of audience interaction or shared moments of reflection in the room. Her dynamic vocal combines the power of theater with the tender introspection of American folk music in a commitment to every song, story, and note being real, raw, and present. Maya Marie With a powerhouse soulful voice and intricate guitar rhythms, Maya Marie brings her original music to life. She combines the essence of folk and rock that produces a unique sound only to her own. Your Mom's House One of Denver's intimate multi-genre indie music venues. Located in the heart of Denver in the Capitol Hill Neighborhood since 2017. Let us tell you about how Black Fret works. Black Fret’s mission is simple: to support the creation and performance of music. But behind its simplicity lies great significance. The music industry, always a hard environment for any artist to make it, is only becoming more challenging. Yet the depth and breadth of incredible music being made in many of our communities is better than ever. It is the dedication, hard work, creativity, and hustle of these artists that inspire us to support this music. We believe that a city is built on the work of its creators. And that unless a community comes together to support those who create, especially when macroeconomic forces are making it harder and harder for bands to exist, let alone thrive, then we will move from cities of creators to cities of consumers. Strong, local arts of all kinds are vital to the health of our communities. Operas, symphonies, theaters, ballet, and other art forms have been supported for generations. Now it is time to step up and support the music that is our lifeblood. The music that moves us that is being created today. Our goal is to create a global network of connected communities, all supporting their local music economies. And in the process of creating this network, provide opportunities for our Black Fret bands to travel between cities, playing bigger gigs and being paid for shows they would not have had the opportunity to otherwise. When more people hear and see the music, the musician is more successful.
