PALM DESERT, CA — Deputies were out in force over the weekend in Palm Desert looking for DUI drivers. Although no DUI arrests were made, 27 people were cited for various vehicle code violations during the "saturation patrol," the Palm Desert Sheriff's Station reported. The increased patrols operated from 6 p.m. Saturday through 2 a.m. Sunday across the city. Deputies made 31 vehicle enforcement stops, the sheriff's station reported. Funding for the effort was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The city will continue to crack down on DUI drivers. Anyone caught driving impaired and charged with DUI will pay a stiff price: an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, the sheriff's station said. In addition to alcohol and marijuana, drivers can also receive a DUI for driving under the influence of some prescription medications.
