Description

Classical Influences on Chicago with Sara Kumar & Rolf Achilles Please join the Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the ICAA in welcoming Scholastic Art & Writing Award National Medal Winner and American Voices Nominee Sara Jain Kumar and Art Historian, Rolf Achilles for an evening discussing Classical Influences on Chicago Architecture. High school junior Sara Jain Kumar took to the streets of Chicago during the early days of the COVID pandemic. Popular attractionsh and monuments were suddenly void of tourists, locals, and passersby as the stay-at-home orders took effect. Combining her interest in photography along with her passion for the Classics, she took unique photographs of a variety of architectural structures with ancient Greek and Roman influences. After recent visits to Italy and Greece, she compiled photos of the past and present, showing the significant impact that the antiquities have had on designing buildings in the Windy City over the last 100+ years. These stunning images, alongside deeply referenced summaries of the history of these buildings and monuments, create a compelling read never before seen in an architectural book about Chicago that will bring the reader along on a visual journey through this wonderful city. Sara’s book will be available for purchase at the event, please make sure to pick up a copy for yourself!
