MALDEN, MA — Officials are investigating what caused a Lowell Street fire earlier this week displaced 21 people. The fire Monday night at 63 Lowell St. ripped through the top half of the 2 1/2-story wood frame. Fire Chief Bill Sullivan told reporters he didn't know how many of the 15 adults and six children who lived there were home at the time. No injuries to residents were reported, but one firefighter was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. Firefighters spent hours battling the three-alarm blaze. Sullivan noted the difficulty of getting the fire truck up through the congested neighborhood. The house suffered "extensive damage," Sullivan said, as fire traveled through the interior of the walls and ceilings. Holes in the front and back of the top of the house could be seen the next day.
