BOSTON — A Boston man was charged with murder from his hospital bed Thursday morning in connection to the stabbing death of his mother in her South End home.
Officers responded to a call Tuesday morning at 1050 Tremont Street in Boston, where they say they found a woman unresponsive and suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Donna Lamb, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene while her son, Najee Herbert, 23, was taken into custody from her house and brought to Boston Medical Center, prosecutors say.
"His mother had found a suicide note in the phone of Mr. Herbert," Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Kettlewell said. "There had been an argument over that, and that as a result of that interaction, he stabbed her."
Three knives were found inside the home, and prosecutors say some of the wounds that brought Herbert to the hospital were "self-inflicted."
Herbert's Thursday morning arraignment revealed he had no previous criminal record, but he was still held without bail. He pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and a judge ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Prosecutors say he will stay in the hospital until he is transferred to Bridgewater State Hospital for an evaluation.
Herbert is due back in court on April 5.
